Parent Web Limits — Privacy Policy

Applicable to: Parent Web Limits browser extension (Chrome, Microsoft Edge)

This privacy policy describes how the Parent Web Limits browser extension (“Extension”) handles information. The Extension enforces per-website daily time limits and works only with the Parent Web Limits agent (“Agent”) installed on the same Windows device. No data is transmitted to remote servers as part of the current functionality.

1. Data We Collect

The Extension uses only the following data, solely to enforce time limits and support “request more time” on the same device:

Site/domain and tab state — The URL or domain of the tab you are viewing, tab visibility (in view vs. in background), and active tab/window state, so the Extension can apply limits and count time only when the site is in view.
Timestamps and timezone — To align with the Agent’s daily reset and time-tracking.
Enforcement events — Locally: which sites are limited, when warnings are shown, when a site is blocked, and when the user requests more time (domain, requested minutes, optional short note). These are used to enforce limits and to send “request more time” to the local Agent.
Controlled domains list — Received from the Agent and stored locally so the Extension knows which sites have limits.
Authentication token — Obtained via Native Messaging from the on-device Parent Web Limits Native Host (or in developer builds only, from the local Agent or a local file). Used only to authenticate the Extension to the Agent on this device.

The Extension does not collect device identifiers for tracking. It does not collect keystrokes, page content, passwords, or message content.

2. Data We Do NOT Collect

The Extension does not collect:

Keystrokes or form input
Page content or text you type
Passwords or payment information
Message content (email, chat, etc.)
Browsing history beyond what is needed for the current tab’s time enforcement
Any data for advertising, analytics, or marketing

3. Where Data Is Processed

All data is processed locally on the device. The Extension communicates only with the Parent Web Limits Agent running on the same computer at http://127.0.0.1:3187 (localhost). There is no transmission to external servers. The Extension does not use third-party analytics, ads, or telemetry.

If the Agent is not installed or not running, the Extension cannot send data anywhere and will indicate that protection is offline.

4. Native Messaging

The Extension uses Chrome/Edge Native Messaging only to obtain an authentication token (secure handshake) from the on-device Parent Web Limits Native Host. That token is used solely to authenticate the Extension to the local Agent.

Native Messaging is not used to:

Send data to remote servers
Execute arbitrary commands
Access or control anything outside the local Agent handshake

The Native Host is installed with the Parent Web Limits product and runs only on the same machine.

5. Incognito Mode

The Extension can operate in incognito (private) windows (spanning mode) so that time limits cannot be bypassed by switching to private browsing. It only runs in incognito if the user (or an administrator) enables “Allow in incognito” in the browser’s extension settings, or if enterprise policy forces it. The Extension does not collect or send additional data in incognito beyond what is needed for enforcement on this device.

6. Children’s Privacy

The Extension is designed for parental control. A parent or guardian installs the Agent and the Extension; the parent configures time limits and controls. Data used by the Extension (domains, time usage, enforcement events) remains on the device and is used only to enforce limits and “request more time” with the local Agent. The Extension does not send children’s data to external services.

7. Data Retention & Deletion

In the Extension: The authentication token and the list of controlled domains are stored in the browser’s local extension storage. They remain until the Extension is uninstalled or the token is cleared/rotated by the Agent. Tab and session state are cleared when the tab or browser session ends.
In the Agent: Usage data (e.g. time per site, requests) is stored by the on-device Agent according to its own behavior. The parent can clear local data by uninstalling the Agent (and, if desired, the Extension). See the product documentation for the Agent’s storage and retention behavior.

The Extension does not set a fixed retention period; data stays as long as needed for operation. Removing the Extension clears its local storage.

The Extension does not share data with advertisers, data brokers, or any third parties. It does not show ads or use data for advertising or marketing.

9. Permissions

The Extension requests browser permissions (tabs, host access to http://127.0.0.1:3187/*, storage, native messaging, notifications, alarms) only to:

Detect which site is open and enforce time limits
Redirect to the Extension’s blocked page when a limit is reached
Obtain an authentication token from the Parent Web Limits Native Host
Show time-warning messages and notifications
Communicate with the local Agent

These permissions are not used for advertising or for sending data off the device.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will be revised when changes are made. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
